Channel Letter Sign Costs in Colorado Springs

Why a set quoted at $3,000 online and a set quoted at $11,000 locally are not the same purchase, what drives the number, and how much signage your wall is allowed to carry under the 2026 sign code.

Quick Answer

A complete illuminated channel letter sign cost in Colorado Springs typically runs $8,000 to $15,000, and non illuminated dimensional lettering runs $2,500 to $10,000. Those are installed project figures covering design, permitting, fabrication, electrical, mounting, and installation, which is why they sit above the $3,000 to $7,000 fabrication-only numbers you will find on national sites that ship you a box of letters. Price is driven mostly by letter height, illumination type, mounting method, and the number and complexity of the letterforms. Halo lit sets typically cost more than face lit sets of the same size. Plan on four to eight weeks for illuminated work, with permit review usually the longest step. These ranges are typical and are not project specific estimates.

Two quotes, $8,000 apart, both for "channel letters." One of them includes a permit, an electrician, and a lift. Guess which.

Channel letters are the most common storefront sign in America and the most confusingly priced. Search the term and you will find sets advertised from a few thousand dollars, then get a local estimate at three times that and assume someone is overcharging.

Usually nobody is. The two numbers describe different transactions. This guide breaks apart what is actually in a channel letter project, what moves the price, and what the current Colorado Springs sign code allows you to put on the wall in the first place.

01/10Section

What a Channel Letter Is

Each letter is an individually fabricated three dimensional object, not a piece cut from one panel. That is the whole reason the format costs what it does, and the reason it looks the way it does.

Anatomy of one letterMultiplied by every character
Part 01
The return

The aluminum side wall that gives the letter its depth, formed to the exact letterform. Depth is typically three to five inches and affects both look and light spread.

Part 02
The face

Translucent acrylic on a face lit letter, cut to shape and color matched to your brand. On a halo lit letter the face is solid painted aluminum instead.

Part 03
The trim cap

The edge that joins face to return and outlines the letter in daylight. Color choice here changes how crisp the letter reads when the sign is off.

Part 04
LED modules and power

Modules inside each letter, wired back to a power supply. This is the part that decides whether the sign still looks even in year seven.

Fabricating a twelve character wordmark means building twelve of those, each one a separate small assembly. Letter count matters, and so does letterform complexity, since a tight script with thin strokes and sharp counters takes far more forming work than a clean sans serif.

The Four Illumination Types

TypeHow it lightsRelative costBest for
Face lit (front lit)Through a translucent acrylic faceBaselineRetail, restaurants, anything read from the road
Halo lit (reverse)Backward onto the wall behindHigher than face litOffices, medical, upscale storefronts
CombinationBoth face and haloHighestFlagship locations wanting maximum presence
Non illuminatedNot at all, reads by daylight and ambient lightLowestDaytime businesses, tight budgets, strict lighting rules

Why halo lit costs more

The letters mount off the wall on standoffs at a controlled gap, the faces are solid painted aluminum requiring more finishing, and the install takes longer because that gap has to be consistent across every character. Industry sources commonly put the premium in the range of twenty to forty percent over a face lit set of the same size.

Which one to actually pick

Face lit reads better from distance and at speed, which matters on Academy, Powers, or anywhere drivers get about two seconds. Halo lit looks better up close and photographs beautifully, which suits an office park or a professional practice where visitors arrive on foot from a parking lot. A wall color that absorbs light will undercut a halo set, so the building matters as much as the taste.

Why Local Costs More Than Online

This is the section worth reading before you compare anything. National sites quoting $3,000 to $7,000 are generally quoting fabrication and shipping. Our $8,000 to $15,000 range is a finished, powered, permitted sign on your building.

Buying letters direct is a real option, and for a handy building owner with an electrician on staff it can work. Just price the rest of the column before deciding it is cheaper. The permit alone is a process, and installation on masonry at height is not a ladder job.

One thing to know about installs

Because the installation falls under our permit, we generally do not install signs produced by unknown or unverified manufacturers. Exceptions may be considered for established national brands when complete drawings and specifications are provided. If you are considering buying letters elsewhere, ask about installation before you order, not after they arrive.

04/10Section

Letter Height Is the Big Lever

Channel letters price largely on material volume, and material scales with the square of the letter height. A 48 inch letter uses roughly four times the aluminum, acrylic, and LED modules of a 24 inch letter in the same typeface.

Which makes letter height the single most effective place to adjust a budget, with one caveat: undersized letters are money wasted, because a sign nobody can read from the road performs like no sign at all.

A rough readability guide

Viewing distancePractical minimum cap heightTypical setting
50 to 100 feet8 to 12 inchesStrip center, close parking
100 to 200 feet15 to 24 inchesSet back from a side street
200 to 350 feet30 to 36 inchesAcross a parking lot from an arterial
350 feet and beyond42 inches and upLarge format, highway visible

Measure the real distance from where a driver first sees the building to where the sign sits. On buildings set well back from the right of way, the sign code actually allows more area, which we get to in section 6.

Raceway vs Flush Mount

Two ways to hang the set, and the choice is often made by the landlord rather than by you.

Raceway mounted

The letters attach to an enclosed horizontal channel that carries the wiring and power supplies. One penetration set into the wall instead of many, all the electrical in one serviceable place, and the raceway can be painted to match the facade. Landlords tend to prefer it because it limits damage to the building and comes off cleanly when a tenant leaves.

Flush mounted

Each letter mounts directly to the wall with wiring routed individually behind it. Cleaner appearance, since there is no visible channel, but more penetrations, more labor, and more coordination on where power comes through. Service later means opening the wall rather than opening a raceway.

Check the lease first

Many Colorado Springs multi-tenant properties specify mounting method, letter style, and even color in their tenant criteria. Read that section of the lease before falling in love with a design. We would rather build to the criteria than redesign after a landlord rejection.

06/10Section

What Your Wall Is Allowed

Under Sign Ordinance No. 26-01, adopted in February 2026, wall sign area is calculated from the length of the building elevation the sign sits on:

  • Commercial and industrial: 1.5 square feet of sign per linear foot of elevation, or 2 square feet per linear foot when the building sits more than 200 feet back from the public right of way.
  • Office and civic: 1 square foot per linear foot.
  • Short elevations: a minimum of 25 square feet is allowed where the building face is under 16.5 feet long.

Worked example. A 40 foot storefront in a commercial center gives you 40 x 1.5, or 60 square feet on that elevation. A set of 24 inch letters spelling a ten character name occupies far less than that, so most tenants have more room than they expect, and the constraint is usually the landlord's criteria rather than the code.

Two other code points that catch channel letter projects: a sign cannot extend past the pitch or peak of a roof, and anything projecting more than 12 inches from the wall is treated as a projecting sign with its own rules. Full detail is in our guide to Colorado Springs sign permits under Ordinance 26-01, and the wall specific walkthrough is in do you need a permit for a wall sign.

07/10Section

The Electrical Side

Illumination is where quality differences hide, because every LED looks fine on installation day.

  • Module quality. Economy LEDs can shift color and dim noticeably within a couple of years, while quality modules hold brightness and color far longer. A set where three letters have gone yellow is worse than no sign.
  • Listed components. Illuminated signs are electrical equipment and get inspected as such. Listed components and proper power supplies are not optional.
  • Power availability. If there is no circuit at the sign location, an electrician has to bring one, and that cost belongs in the budget from the start rather than appearing at install.
  • Even lighting. Module spacing and letter depth determine whether the face glows evenly or shows hot spots. Shallow returns with too few modules produce spotty letters.

Worth being clear on one distinction: a channel letter set with static internal lighting is not an electronic message center. Digital displays that change messages are a separate sign type under the code with their own limits on area, brightness, hold time, and quantity. Our guide to LED and electronic message center rules covers those.

08/10Section

Timeline, Realistically

Illuminated signage runs four to eight weeks from approved estimate to a lit sign. The sequence:

  1. Site survey and design. Measurements, elevation length, mounting assessment, and artwork.
  2. Estimate and approval. Once the estimate is approved and the deposit is received, our team will begin the design and proofing process.
  3. Permit submittal and review. Usually the longest step, and it depends on the city rather than on us. Historic district review or a coordinated sign plan extends it.
  4. Fabrication. Letters formed, faces cut, modules installed, assemblies tested.
  5. Installation and connection, then inspection.

Non illuminated dimensional lettering moves much faster, often one to two weeks, because there is no electrical scope and frequently a simpler permit path. Some sign projects require engineered drawings based on the sign type, size, mounting method, and site conditions. We confirm the applicable requirements as part of the project review.

The scheduling mistake

Businesses plan signage around a grand opening date and start the conversation four weeks out. Permit review does not compress for anyone. Start the sign conversation when you sign the lease, not when you set the opening date.

09/10Section

The Non Illuminated Option

Dimensional letters without internal lighting run $2,500 to $10,000 as an installed project, and for a lot of Colorado Springs businesses they are the better buy.

They make sense when:

  • You close before dark, so the sign would be lit for an audience that is not there.
  • The building already has good facade lighting that can wash the letters.
  • Landlord criteria or the code limit illumination on your elevation.
  • The budget is better spent on larger letters than on lighting smaller ones.

Material choice does most of the work here. Fabricated aluminum, cast metal, and acrylic each have different price points, weights, and weather behavior at our elevation, which we cover in acrylic, aluminum or PVC. The visual difference between channel letters and flat cut letters is worth understanding before you choose, and that comparison lives in channel letters vs flat cut letters.

What to Ask Before Signing

Six questions that make two estimates comparable:

  1. Is the permit included, and who submits it?
  2. What letter height and depth is being quoted, and what is the total sign area against my allowance?
  3. Face lit or halo lit, and what is the price difference between them on this set?
  4. Raceway or flush, and does that match the landlord's tenant criteria?
  5. Whose electrician brings power to the sign location?
  6. What LED modules and power supplies, named, so lighting quality can be compared?

An estimate that answers all six is comparable to another estimate that answers all six. Anything vaguer is a number, not a scope.

Send us your address, a photo of the building face, and the tenant space dimensions. Our team will confirm what the code allows on that wall before designing anything, and the estimate will name what is included. Key Takeaways

The Short Version

  • Illuminated channel letter projects in Colorado Springs typically run $8,000 to $15,000 installed, and non illuminated dimensional lettering runs $2,500 to $10,000.
  • Lower national prices generally quote fabrication and shipping only, leaving design, survey, permit, engineering, electrical, and installation to you.
  • Letter height drives cost more than anything else, since material scales with the square of the height. A 48 inch letter uses roughly four times a 24 inch letter.
  • Face lit reads better from the road, halo lit looks better up close, and halo typically carries a twenty to forty percent premium at the same size.
  • Raceway mounting limits wall penetrations and is often required by landlords. Flush mounting looks cleaner and costs more in labor.
  • Under Ordinance 26-01, commercial walls allow 1.5 square feet of sign per linear foot of elevation, or 2 square feet when set back more than 200 feet from the right of way.
  • Plan four to eight weeks for illuminated work, with permit review usually the longest step. Start at lease signing, not at opening date.

Common questions

Channel Letter FAQ

How much does a channel letter sign cost in Colorado Springs?

An installed illuminated set typically runs $8,000 to $15,000, covering design, permitting, fabrication, electrical, mounting, and installation. Non illuminated dimensional lettering runs $2,500 to $10,000. These ranges are typical and are not project specific estimates.

Why are online channel letters so much cheaper?

Because they are a different purchase. National pricing generally covers fabrication and shipping, leaving design, site survey, permit drawings and submittal, engineered drawings if required, electrical connection, lift and crew, and installation to you. Price those items before comparing the two numbers.

What is the difference between face lit and halo lit letters?

Face lit letters have a translucent acrylic face with LEDs inside shining forward, which reads best from a distance and at driving speed. Halo lit letters have a solid painted face and throw light backward onto the wall, creating a glow that looks refined up close. Halo typically costs twenty to forty percent more at the same size.

How big should my letters be?

Measure from where a driver first sees the building to the sign. As a practical guide, 8 to 12 inches works for 50 to 100 feet, 15 to 24 inches for 100 to 200 feet, 30 to 36 inches for 200 to 350 feet, and 42 inches or more beyond that. Undersized letters cost less and perform like no sign at all.

How much wall signage does Colorado Springs allow?

Under Sign Ordinance No. 26-01, commercial and industrial uses get 1.5 square feet of wall sign per linear foot of building elevation, or 2 square feet per linear foot when the building is set back more than 200 feet from the public right of way. Office and civic uses get 1 square foot per linear foot, and elevations under 16.5 feet are allowed a minimum of 25 square feet.

What is a raceway and do I need one?

A raceway is an enclosed channel that the letters mount to, carrying wiring and power supplies in one serviceable place with fewer wall penetrations. Many landlords require it because it limits building damage and removes cleanly at tenant turnover. Flush mounting looks cleaner but costs more in labor and makes later service harder.

How long does a channel letter project take?

Four to eight weeks for illuminated work, from approved estimate to a lit sign, with permit review usually the longest step. Non illuminated lettering often runs one to two weeks. Start the conversation when you sign the lease rather than when you set an opening date.

Do channel letters need a permit?

Yes. Wall signs are a major sign type under the current code and require a permit before installation, reviewed by the city before the Building Official issues. Illuminated signs also involve building and electrical permit requirements through Pikes Peak Regional Building Department.

Can I buy letters online and have you install them?

Because the installation falls under our permit, we generally do not install signs produced by unknown or unverified manufacturers. Exceptions may be considered for established national brands when complete drawings and specifications are provided. Ask about installation before ordering rather than after the letters arrive.

Are LED channel letters expensive to run?

LED modules draw far less power than older illumination methods, so operating cost is modest for a typical storefront set. The bigger variable is module quality, since economy LEDs can shift color or dim within a couple of years while quality modules hold brightness and color much longer.
