The Short Answer

APG: Advanced Printing and Graphics provides vehicle wrap removal in Colorado Springs for full wraps, partial wraps, lettering, and decals on cars, vans, trucks, and trailers. Film is warmed so the adhesive releases, peeled at the angle the film calls for, and any adhesive left behind is cleaned with products made for automotive paint. Removal is done indoors in a heated bay. A newer cast wrap often comes off in hours, while old, sun-baked, or economy calendered film can take far longer because it breaks into small pieces. After removal, we inspect the paint and point out ghosting or damage before anything new goes on.

A wrap is designed to come off. How cleanly it comes off depends on the film, its age, the paint underneath, and the patience of the person removing it.

Wraps come off for many reasons: a lease return, a sale, a rebrand, a wrap at the end of its life, or damage that is easier to fix with a fresh start. Done right, removal leaves sound factory paint looking much as it did when the wrap went on. Rushed, overheated, done with the wrong tools, or done in the cold, it can leave heavy adhesive and lift paint on weak panels.

This page covers when to remove a wrap, how the process works, why film age and type matter, what ghosting is, how lease returns are handled, and what we check after removal. For removing all company identification from fleet vehicles before sale, see our fleet de-identification page.

When to remove a wrap

The best time to remove a wrap is before it is worn out. Film that is still flexible releases cleanly. Film that has cracked, faded, and baked onto the paint comes off slowly, often in small pieces.

  • End of life. Cast vinyl with laminate typically lasts five to seven years on a hand-washed vehicle in Colorado Springs, longer if garaged. Once film starts cracking, chalking, or shrinking at edges, removal gets harder each month.
  • Lease return. Many leases require the vehicle to come back without graphics. Schedule removal weeks before the return date, not days.
  • Sale or trade-in. A wrapped vehicle with a company name is hard to sell and can carry your brand into someone else's hands.
  • Rebrand. Old graphics come off before new ones go on. Our fleet rebranding page covers planning a fleet change.
  • Damage. A wrap with widespread hail damage, tears, or failure may be better removed and replaced than patched. Our wrap repair page covers when a single panel can be fixed instead.

How removal works

Wrap removal comes down to controlled heat and a slow, steady peel. Speed comes from experience, not force.

  1. Inspection. We look at the film and paint before starting, note any visible damage, and identify repainted panels that may react differently.
  2. Heat. The film is warmed so the adhesive softens and releases. Film makers publish heat ranges for their products; 3M's removal bulletin, for example, calls for warming most applied graphics to about 72 to 93 C. Too little heat tears the film, and too much can harm paint, plastic trim, and rubber seals.
  3. Peel angle. The film is pulled back at the angle that releases its adhesive best. 3M notes that many removable films release best at a high angle, while perforated window films and some reflective films release best at a low angle.
  4. Adhesive removal. Any adhesive left on the paint is removed with a remover made for automotive finishes, worked with plastic tools rather than metal blades.
  5. Wash and inspect. The vehicle is washed, and the paint is inspected under good light.

Removal happens indoors. Film becomes brittle in the cold and breaks into small pieces, which turns a few hours of work into a long day.

Why film age and type matter

Two vehicles with the same size wrap can take very different amounts of time to strip. The film and its history make the difference.

Film conditionHow removal usually goes
Cast vinyl with laminate, within its rated lifeReleases in large sheets with heat. Little adhesive left behind.
Cast vinyl past its rated lifeSlower. Film tears more often and leaves more adhesive, especially on sun-facing panels.
Calendered vinylOften cracks and comes off in small pieces. Much slower, with more adhesive cleanup.
Unlaminated printsThinner and more brittle with age. More tearing than laminated film.
Layered graphicsLettering on top of a wrap, or one wrap over another, adds time for each layer.

3M's removal bulletin explains why: older graphics become brittle and their adhesion increases with time, and heat and UV exposure make film slower to remove. At 6,035 feet, UV is stronger than at sea level, so roofs, hoods, and south-facing sides usually take longest. Our guide to cast vs calendered vinyl explains the difference in film types.

Ghosting and what the paint looks like underneath

Paint under a wrap has been shielded from sun for years. The paint around it, and the paint under any gaps in the design, has not. That difference can show after removal.

  • Ghosting. A faint outline of old lettering or design edges, caused by paint that weathered around the film. It is most common on cut vinyl lettering and partial wraps where the design left paint exposed.
  • Gloss difference. Covered paint may look glossier than exposed paint around it.
  • Adhesive haze. A thin film of adhesive that needs a second cleaning pass.

Polishing by a detail professional often reduces ghosting and gloss differences, though it does not always remove them completely. When the vehicle is getting new graphics, the new design usually covers old outlines.

A professionally installed wrap generally does not damage sound factory paint and can help protect it from UV exposure and normal road wear. However, repainted panels, failing clear coat, rust, and existing paint damage may be affected during installation or removal. We inspect the vehicle and discuss any concerns before production.

Lease returns and vehicle sales

Lease returns are the most time-sensitive removals we do. Many leases call for the vehicle to come back in its original condition, and leasing companies inspect for residue, ghosting, and paint damage.

  • Read the lease first. Check the return condition language and any wear allowance before scheduling.
  • Leave a buffer. Schedule removal two to three weeks before the return date, so there is time for polishing or touch-up if needed.
  • Photos. We can photograph the vehicle after removal so you have a record of its condition.
  • Every identifier. When a vehicle is sold or returned, remove interior decals, QR codes, and unit numbers too, not just the exterior wrap.

For fleets selling or returning many vehicles at once, our fleet de-identification service covers removal of every company identifier, with a record for each vehicle.

Removing graphics another company installed

We regularly remove wraps and lettering installed by other companies. The process is the same, but we do not know the film's history, so we start with a test area.

  • Test pull. A small area shows how the film releases and how much adhesive it leaves.
  • Unknown film. If we cannot identify the film, we plan for the slower case until the test shows otherwise.
  • Prior paint work. Panels repainted after a collision may not have the same adhesion as factory paint, and those are the panels most likely to lift paint during removal. Tell us about any body work you know of.

If you are replacing the wrap, get the new film on record. Ask each provider to identify the film series and laminate included in the estimate. Knowing the film makes the next removal easier to plan.

How a wrap removal runs

  1. Photos and detailsSend photos of each side, the vehicle's year, make, and model, the age of the wrap, and the date you need it done.
  2. Inspection and estimateWe inspect the film and paint, do a test pull if needed, and send a written estimate based on film type, age, and condition.
  3. Indoor removalThe vehicle comes into a heated bay. Film is warmed and peeled at the right angle, layer by layer.
  4. Adhesive cleanup and washRemaining adhesive is cleaned with products made for automotive paint, and the vehicle is washed.
  5. Paint inspection and walkthroughWe inspect the paint with you, point out any ghosting or damage, and photograph the vehicle on request.

Is professional removal the right call?

Small decals can sometimes come off at home. Most wraps and lettering are better handled by a professional.

A good fit when

  • The vehicle has a full or partial wrap, or several years of lettering
  • The vehicle is going back to a leasing company or being sold
  • The film is cracked, faded, or past its rated life
  • The vehicle is getting new graphics and needs clean paint first

Look elsewhere when

  • You only need a single small, recent decal removed
  • The paint underneath is already failing and the vehicle is headed for a repaint anyway
  • You need it done outdoors in freezing weather on the same day

Common questions

Vehicle Wrap Removal FAQ

Who removes vehicle wraps in Colorado Springs?

APG: Advanced Printing and Graphics provides vehicle wrap removal in Colorado Springs for full and partial wraps, lettering, decals, and window film, indoors in a heated bay.

How long does it take to remove a vehicle wrap?

It depends on the film type, age, and condition. A newer cast wrap often comes off in hours, while old, sun-baked, or calendered film can take much longer because it breaks into small pieces and leaves more adhesive.

Will removing a wrap damage my paint?

Removal done with controlled heat and the right tools generally does not damage sound factory paint. However, repainted panels, failing clear coat, rust, and existing paint damage may be affected during removal, so we inspect the vehicle and discuss any concerns first.

What is ghosting after wrap removal?

Ghosting is a faint outline of old graphics left on the paint because exposed paint weathered while covered paint did not. Polishing often reduces it, though it does not always remove it completely.

Why does old vinyl take longer to remove?

Older graphics become brittle and their adhesion increases with time, according to 3M's removal guidance. Heat and UV exposure, which are strong at Colorado Springs' altitude, speed up that process.

Can I remove a wrap myself?

Small, recent decals can sometimes be removed at home with gentle heat and patience. Full wraps and aged film are better handled by a professional, because too much heat, metal tools, or cold temperatures can damage paint or leave heavy residue.

Should I remove the wrap before returning a leased vehicle?

Yes, in most cases. Leases often require the vehicle to be returned in original condition, so schedule removal two to three weeks before the return date to leave time for polishing if needed.

Can you remove a wrap another company installed?

Yes. APG removes wraps installed by other companies and starts with a test area, because the film and its history are unknown.

Can wraps be removed in winter?

Yes, indoors. Film becomes brittle in the cold and breaks into small pieces, so APG removes wraps in a heated bay year round.
